Lambeth GP Food Co-op and Medirest Partnership at King’s College Hospital
Lambeth GP Food Co-op are delighted to be launching our partnership with Medirest on NHS Sustainability Day, Thursday 24th March 2016. We are working together to provide patient-grown local produce for sale at a new stall in the hospital’s Golden Jubilee Wing. The stall will be open for business from 11am.
We will also be holding a food tasting session between 12 and 2pm in the Jennie Lee House garden using ingredients grown by patients and prepared by Medirest chefs. This is our partnership in action. Key speakers from the following organisations supporting the Lambeth GP Food Co-op and Medirest include: Mayor of Lambeth Donatus Anyanwu, Dr Raj Mitra, Public Engagement Lead, NHS Lambeth CCG and GP member of Lambeth GP Food Co-op Board, David Morgan, Operations Manager Medirest, King’s College Hospital, Ed Rosen Project Director LGPFC and patients from the project.
Our shared vision:
The Lambeth GP Food Co-op is a co-operative of patients, doctors, nurses and local residents. The co-operative builds gardens in GP surgeries to enable patients to learn how to grow food.
The co-operative is the first of its kind in the NHS with funding from Lambeth Council and NHS Lambeth Clinical Commissioning Group. Since 2015, the Lambeth GP Food Co-op has been supporting a food growing garden at Jennie Lee House. Our partnership with Medirest will provide future opportunities for collaborating on a shared health food agenda.
Medirest, the specialist healthcare arm of Compass Group, provides soft service in over 30 acute NHS Trusts in the UK and provides tens of thousands of meals to patients, staff and visitors each week. Responding to the Hospital Food Standards Panel Report (2014), Medirest launched their Health and Wellbeing Strategy with the aim of:
“To lead and champion health and wellbeing in the UK by implementing activities that contribute to health improvement for all and shaping a “health promoting hospital.”
“I heartily recommend joining (the Lambeth GP Food Co-op garden group), whether it’s for the pleasure of growing your own fresh produce, for taking up an active hobby, or simply to combat social isolation. I think these schemes can only benefit both individuals and communities. No experience necessary, just a willingness to get involved.”
Lambeth GP Food Co-op member at Mawbey Group Practice, Vauxhall
“The Lambeth GP Food Co-op is a great initiative supporting sustainability through locally grown produce. It’s great to see Medirest supporting this initiative and demonstrating their commitment as a company to supporting health and wellbeing which we know is a priority for the NHS. I am very much looking forward to trying the Lambeth GP Food Co-op’s produce from their market stall!”
Jan Flint, Director of Nutrition and Dietetics, King’s College Hospital
“Medirest are delighted to be working with the Lambeth GP Food Co-op and supporting the local community and the health promoting hospital agenda at the Trust.”
Lisa Hunter, Medirest Catering Dietitian
“An initiative that delivers real long-term sustainable benefits to the health of Lambeth residents…it fits in well with our Food Flagship Borough programme.”
Cllr Jim Dickson, Lambeth Council Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing
“It’s great to see an initiative in London focusing on providing fresh, locally grown produce.
“Creating this food garden for the Lambeth community will enable access to fresh food in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner.
“It’s important that people eat a healthy diet combined with physical activity, and this scheme will help people in making the right food choices.
“Community interventions like this help to reduce social isolation by bringing people together, and we find they can help ease the pressure health and social care services face from social isolation in London.”
